He was appointed on March 15, 2013 as S Nakanishi had attained the age of retirement.
The decision was taken by the board in a bid to ensure continuity in operation ahead of the critical regulatory changes in 2020.
His appointment in 2013 came when Indian economy was going through a rough patch and the auto industry felt the pinch. When he took over, Maruti Suzuki had sold 11,71,434 units in the fiscal 2012-13 which later increased to 12,92,415 units in 2014-15.
Ayukawa played a pivotal role in helping Maruti Suzuki tide over the labour issue in 2013 and drafted a game plan that has helped the company grow its market share beyond 50%.
During his tenure, the company has introduced many new models, including mid-sized sedan Ciaz, SUV Vitara Brezza, premium hatchback Baleno and re-launch of its compact hatchback, All new WagonR.
In a separate statement the company informed exchanges that based on the Toyota and Suzuki Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 6, 2017, both the partners have begun concrete examinations toward the realization of business partnership in areas including environmental technologies, safety technologies, information technologies, and mutual supply of products and components.
The Board of Directors also approved proposals of adopting Toyota Hybrid System (THS) in future products of the company, that will help Maruti Suzuki to become a front runner of clean technology in mass market and help in sustainable development of Indian Automotive Industry.
"Manufacturing of Vitara Brezza starting year 2022 at existing Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) plant which will save investment in new plant for the Company. Variants of this model will be sold through sales network of the company and TKM respectively," company said in a regulatory filing.
According to Maruti Suzuki, the supply of Baleno to TKM will result in incremental sales for the company.
